Since its formation in 1984, MeSHEC has:
Supported the successful introduction of a health education graduation
requirement and a K-12 health education mandate as part of the 1984
Education Reform Act
Participated in the development of health education teacher certification
requirements
Organized summer Health Education Teacher Academies at the University
of Maine Farmington
Provided financial support and leveraged additional financial support
to include health education of the Maine Educational Assessment
Sponsored, with the Governor’s Office and Maine PTA, a Health
Education Summit for leaders in health and education in Maine
Advocated to reduce youth smoking in Maine
Advocated the adoption of the Maine Learning Results, including
standards for health education instruction
Successfully advocated for the use of tobacco settlement funds for
school health coordinators and comprehensive school health education
