Communicating with legislators

Advocacy can occur any time. Many opportunities exist for sharing opinions with your local school board or city council. Advocacy can occur when you encounter a legislator in the State House or the post office. You can sign up to speak at a public hearing or write to legislators about your viewpoint. There are specific points in the legislative process when bills are most readily affected. Advocacy groups like MeSHEC can help you decide upon the most effective strategy for making your views known to decision makers.

How do I find information about my State Legislators?

You have two Maine State Legislators, a member of the House of Representatives and a member of the Senate. You can find out the names of your legislators by clicking here.

Just click on the first letter of your town and a list will pop up. Find your town and both your Representative and Senator will be listed. Click on the names to get a photo, address, phone number and other information.

When is the Maine Legislature in session?

Maine has a part-time legislature. The legislative session begins in January. In even years, it runs through April. In odd years, it runs through June. Sometimes the legislative session runs past its official closing date.
