| Communicating with legislators by letter
| · |
Identify yourself using
your name and address. If you are a constituent, say so. |
| · |
Identify the issue you want
to talk about. When referring to a bill use its number
and its title. |
| · |
State both your position and how you
would like the legislator to vote. |
| · |
Ask for the legislator’s position
on the bill or issue. If supportive, ask for a commitment
to vote for your position. If opposing or undecided, thank
them for the information — don’t argue with
them on the phone. Ask what information would be helpful
in helping the legislator become a proponent. If the legislator
is unavailable, leave a message with the above information. |
| · |
Follow up by sending a note thanking
the legislator for their time. Include any information
that the legislator can use to solidify their position,
or which may move them to support your position. |
