Public Speaking Tips

Speaking at town meetings, public events, or organizational meetings can support your advocacy efforts by:

· Better informing and educating the members of the group or community
· Attracting attention to an issue or your program
· Gaining press coverage
· Positioning yourself as an advocate

To make the most of this type of opportunity:

· Determine the purpose and tone of the event. Gaining a better sense of what the overall agenda of the meeting is to be focused on and anticipating the general tone of the meeting will help you to prepare your remarks and delivery style.
· Be prepared with accurate, timely, and relevant information
· Use your network. Share information about the meeting with other advocates that can lend support to your efforts.
· Keep your presentation brief. Limit your statement to a small number of clear, concise points
· Be precise and concise.
· Concentrate your remarks on what can be done and keep your remarks as positive as possible.
· Avoid excessive detail.
Use your best professional judgment in suggesting possible actions.
  Be polite.
